Assateague Island National Seashore Condemnation Blight

State actions, at instance of the Secretary of the Interior, depressed values so significantly that Fair Market Values had to be derived from off-island sales

In March 1965, the Subcommittee on Parks and Recreation of the United States Senate held hearings, at which [Maryland] Governor Tawes stated:

"We in Maryland are doing everything legally possible to prevent residential and commercial development on the island. So far we have been successful, but legal actions are now pending before our courts to require the issuing of building permits for improvements on the island. We are doing our very best to hold the line but I don’t know how long we can prevail."
